When Are Roller Shades and Shutters the Best Choice for Your Home?

My name is Richard. I own a large commercial business which is located in Melbourne, Australia. Last year, I decided I needed to revamp the look of my business so I shut everything down for 8 weeks and called in a team of contractors. The contractors replaced the plumbing and installed a new electrical system. I also asked them to carry out some work on the roof. I was really impressed with how quickly they completed the work so I could reopen my business to the public. I decided to start this blog so I could offer advice to other business owners.

You have many options when it comes to interior window treatments, including curtains, cafe shutters, roller blinds, and roller shutters. Each will have their own pros and cons, but note when roller shutters and shades, and especially those controlled by a motor and remote control, maybe the best option.

Larger windows

Trying to cover larger windows with curtains of any sort can be a challenge, as the amount of fabric needed to span an entire wall can be very overwhelming. You may not think much of this when the curtains are opened and pulled back, but once they're closed for the night, your whole room may seem as if it's enclosed in that curtain fabric!

It can also be a challenge to choose curtain fabric that doesn't clash with upholstered furniture, and clashing patterns and colours become even more obvious with large curtains. Roller shades and shutters are more compact and don't overwhelm the space, and a simple wood or vinyl material will typically complement any type of furniture style.

For a modern look

There is a limited number of curtain materials and styles that blend well in a modern home with glass and metal accents, as many curtain fabrics can seem too traditional in a modern home. Cottage shutters, meaning those that are panelled and open on hinges, also have a somewhat country look, and these can also clash with your decor.

Roller shades and shutters, however, look very neutral and blend easily with a modern design; their square edges also work well with the sharp lines used in modern decor. Their neutral look also adds to the simplicity of decor that is often chosen for a modern design theme.

For security

You may not associate your home's window treatments with security, but motorized, remote-controlled shades and blinds can allow you to make your home seem occupied when you're away. You can move those shades randomly, as you would when at home, or close them all at a particular time, also making it seem as if someone is home. You can also close them anytime you're gone, to keep potential thieves from looking into your home, trying to see if there is something worth stealing.

Many roller blinds and shades also come with a type of resistance in the roller itself, so that they cannot be lifted from the outside. This provides an added layer of security in your home, in case a thief or intruder does break the window, hoping to gain entry.
